Institute of Law at Birzeit University Announces Launching 4th Version of the Palestinian Legal and Judicial System (AL MUQTAFI)

In a workshop held on Thursday 3 April 2008, the Institute of Law (IoL) at Birzeit University announced the launching of the 4th version of the Palestinian Legal and Judicial System (AL MUQTAFI). A large number of participants attended the event, including judges at the Palestinian High Court and Court of Appeals, lawyers, representatives of Palestinian ministries, civil society organisations, international and foreign organisations in the controlled territory of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), as well as current and former IoL staff members, including legal researchers and IT programmers.

This workshop is part and parcel of IoL's mission to preserving Palestine's legal heritage and developing the Palestinian legal and judicial system. The workshop also aims to promote partnership and cooperation with justice-related institutions. In this context, IoL has implemented the Legislation Consolidation Project, with funds provided by the Belgian Government, as well as the Court Judgements Database, funded by the European Union. Furthermore, AL MUQTAFI 4th version is one of IoL's relentless efforts to assist PNA agencies in institutional state building activities. Since established, and in close cooperation with the PNA, friends and donor community, IoL's specialised departments and units have worked hand in hand to develop Palestinian legislation and improve the judiciary to bring the Palestinian justice sector to an advanced position.

Both the Legislation Consolidation and Court Judgements Database are publicly accessible free of charge. Over 15 years, more than 40 IoL legal researchers, assisted by IT programmers, technicians, local and international experts and administrative assistants, have developed these databases.
