The Institute of Law Celebrates Graduation of the First Class in the Specialised Professional Diploma Programme in Family Law
On Saturday, 30 January 2016, the Institute of Law (IoL) of Birzeit University organised a graduation ceremony for the first class in the Specialised Professional Diploma Programme in Family Law. Launched in 2014,
the Diploma Programme is designed to develop and enhance the theoretical background and legal skills of family lawyers and judges. Combining theory and practice, the Diploma Programme provides capacity building to family court staff and lawyers in the areas of personal status, inheritance, Waqf (real property dedicated to pious purposes or pious foundations), family court procedure, etc. The first class of trainees included 20 male and female Palestinian law students, who wished to apply for examinations scheduled for practicing the legal profession before family courts inside the Palestinian territory occupied in 1948.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Ghassan Faramand, IoL Director, welcomed the audience and congratulated graduates. “This Diploma Programme is a positive proof of unity among Palestinians in all the areas where they reside.” Dr. Faramand asserted that the Programme is one of the activities and initiatives the IoL is implementing in the area of family laws and judicial practice. Dr. Faramand thanked the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation inside the Green Line for their cooperation and partnership in implementing this Diploma Programme.
Dr. Nayifah as Sarisi, Director of the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation, congratulated graduates and thanked the IoL for the efforts and resources it has invested in delivering this Diploma Programme. Dr. Sarisi stressed that “similar activities need to be implemented in the future with a view to positively reflect on and develop the Arab community inside the Green Line, particularly family judges and lawyers who argue cases in family courts.”
On behalf of graduates, Ms. Shaden Abu Tayeh, congratulated her colleagues and herself for graduation. Ms. Abu Tayeh expressed her special thanks and appreciation to the IoL and the trainers for the distinctive effort they invested to make the Diploma Programme a success. She also highlighted significance of the training modules on family lawy and procedures before family courts. Finally, Ms. Abu Tayeh urged both the IoL and the Nisaa wa Afaq (Women and Horizons) Organisation to maintain cooperation and implement further joint initiatives on family laws and procedure before family courts.
In conclusion of the ceremony, certificates were awarded to all 20 participants in the Specialised Professional Diploma Programme in Family Law.
