Second Training Course on Trial Procedures before Family Courts

In cooperation with the High Council of Family Courts, the Institute of Law (IoL) at Birzeit University launched on 8 December 2012 the second training course on Trial Procedures before Family Courts.

In the opening session, Mr. Jamil Salem, IoL Director, welcomed His Eminence Sheikh Yousef Id’eis, lawyers and trainees. Mr. Salem expressed his thanks to Sheikh Id’eis and the High Council of Family Courts for their concerted effort towards consolidating the principle of the rule of law and developing functions of family courts. Mr. Salem highly appreciated the Council’s cooperation with the IoL build the Family Court Judgement Database on the Palestinian Legal and Judicial System (AL-MUQTAFI), which will contribute to more effective and efficient family court operation. In this context, Mr. Salem made reference to the plethora of training courses IoL has provided to family court judges and lawyers.

Mr. Salem made a briefing note about themes to be covered by the training course, including inheritance, Khul’ [wife-initiated divorce], and code of conduct for family court lawyers. Linking theory to practice, the training event includes a mock trial that simulates real trial procedures before family courts. Wishing that the training course be a success, Mr. Salem expressed his gratitude and appreciation to both IoL and family court staff.

Having welcomed the audience, Sheikh Id’eis thanked the IoL for the extensive effort it is making to develop family courts. Highlighting significance of the event, Sheikh Id’eis stated that “training topics are a major component of family court functions and trial procedures.” In reality, lawyers need to master these training themes and be familiar with the High Council of Family Courts’ circulars on trial procedures before family courts. He also stressed that trainees should complete the training course. Finally, Sheikh Id’eis expressed his thanks and gratitude to the IoL staff.

Advocate Abeer Dirbas, IoL legal researcher, made a presentation on AL-MUQTAFI’s Family Court Judgement Database.

Scheduled for three days, the training course will take place on 8, 15 and 22 December 2012.
